From Recital to Trick-or-Treat: Give That Dance Costume a Halloween Encore!

You know the costume. It sparkled under the stage lights, starred in approximately 200 photos, and has been hanging in the closet ever since. This Halloween, let it take another bow!
Dance costumes make wonderful starting points for Halloween looks. The outfit is already there; all you need is a character, a few accessories, and your dancer’s imagination.
Let the costume choose the character
A tutu becomes a fairy, butterfly, or garden flower. Add wings, a wand, or a flower crown. A bright tutu could even become the start of a colorful cupcake costume!
A sparkly jazz costume becomes a pop star. Bring out the sunglasses and a toy microphone. Your dancer can make up a stage name—and perhaps perform one song before heading out for candy.
A flowing lyrical costume becomes a moon princess or woodland spirit. A cape, ribbon, or simple headpiece can create a whole new character without changing the costume.
A tap costume becomes a showtime character. Think ringmaster, magician, or Broadway star. Add a top hat and bow tie, then let your dancer decide on their grand entrance.
A hip hop costume becomes a superhero outfit. A jacket, sneakers, and a homemade emblem are all it takes. The best part? Your dancer gets to invent their own superpower.
A themed group costume gets a second act. If several dance friends have matching costumes, they can trick-or-treat together as a whole cast of characters.
Make it their idea
Before buying anything new, pull out last season’s costume and ask, “Who could you become in this?” You may have a fairy in mind while your dancer sees a rock star from another planet. Go with it! Their idea is probably going to be more fun.
Lay out a few things you already own—hats, jackets, ribbons, costume jewelry, or craft supplies—and see what they create. Sometimes one accessory changes everything.
Give the costume a Halloween test run
Recital costumes were made for the stage, so have your dancer try the full outfit on before Halloween night. Make sure they can move comfortably, wear shoes that work for walking, and add a layer if the evening is cool. If they’ll be out after dark, add something visible, such as a reflective item on their candy bag.
And if the costume is still needed for an upcoming performance, use accessories that are easy to remove. Glitter glue is a lot harder to undo than a cape!
