What Every Competition Dancer Should Have
(From a Studio Owner & Dance Mom)
Competition season is exciting, rewarding, and—let’s be honest—a little overwhelming at times. Between early mornings, quick changes, and big performances, being prepared makes all the difference for both dancers and parents.
As a studio owner and dance mom, I’ve seen firsthand what helps dancers feel confident, calm, and ready to shine on competition day. Below is a list of competition team dancer essentials—items every dancer should have to set them up for success.
1. A Reliable Dance Bag (Organization Is Everything)
A competition dancer’s bag should be spacious, durable, and organized.
Must-haves inside the bag:
Separate compartments for shoes and costumes
Easy-access pockets for hair and makeup
A bag that can handle long days and travel
👉 Tip: Clear or structured organizers inside the bag save time during fast costume changes.
2. Hair & Makeup Emergency Kit
Even the most prepared dancers need last-minute fixes.
Every competition kit should include:
Hair ties, bobby pins, hair nets
Strong-hold hairspray & gel
Compact mirror
Makeup for touch-ups
Makeup wipes or tissues
3. Costumes & Garment Bags
Wrinkle-free costumes = confident dancers.
Essentials:
Individual garment bags for each costume
Labeled hangers with dancer’s name
Safety pins and fashion tape
Tip: Pack costumes in performance order to avoid stress backstage.
4. Proper Shoes & Backup Options
Shoes can make or break a performance.
Be sure dancers have:
All required competition shoes
Clean soles (check before every competition)
Extra laces or elastics
A backup pair if possible
Always double-check shoes the night before competition day.
5. Warm-Ups & Layers
Competitions often mean long waits between dances.
Helpful items include:
Studio-approved warm-up jacket or sweatshirt
Sweatpants or leggings
Socks or booties to keep feet warm
Keeping muscles warm helps prevent injury and keeps dancers performance-ready.
6. Snacks, Hydration & Energy Boosters
Fuel matters—especially during long competition days.
Competition-friendly snacks:
Protein bars or bites
Fruit snacks or applesauce pouches
Water bottles or electrolyte drinks
Avoid messy or sugary snacks right before performing.
7. Confidence & Preparedness (The Most Important Essential)
While items matter, confidence comes from preparation.
Encourage dancers to:
Practice packing their bag
Review routines and counts
Arrive early and stay calm
Support teammates
Competition is about growth, teamwork, and learning—not just trophies.
Final Thoughts from the Studio
Competition season teaches dancers responsibility, discipline, resilience, and confidence—skills that last far beyond the stage.
When dancers feel prepared, they perform with confidence. When parents feel organized, the experience is more enjoyable for everyone.
